 Alfred Korzybski was a huge influence on Neil Postman. Korzybski studied to the extreme the verb "to be", and believed it faulty in nature. The thought that words are not what they represent was authored by him. In other words, the word apple is not in fact an apple, but only an arrangement of letters and symbols that remind us of an apple.
